Why do people blog? And why have I started now, too? It certainly isn’t the insatiable need to be heard. Not in my case, I don’t think, at any rate. I’m not sure, sitting here with the acres of white screen stretching out in front of me that I have anything particularly important or interesting to say. I mean, that is why we are drawn to communicating, after all, isn’t it? The need to share something with others. Or perhaps it is to make an electronic mark in the world, some fragment of an existence that explains who we are. Well, this is me. I’m tentatively stepping into the world now. No going back. Because apparently when you put words on the web, they are there forever. Forever!…Wow. Now that’s massive. No pressure. To be fabulous, or not to be fabulous. I guess we’ll see now, won’t we?….if anyone is even interested and finds me.
So why wotuse? It’s a long standing joke. I guess I should make sure that you know it’s pronounced ‘wot use…as in ‘what use’. Not that I imagine you can’t read of course, but someone saw the word written down just today and I realised by the way they pronounced it that it perhaps wasn’t that obvious. As for the meaning, well, it relates to an event when my mother in law was bemused by the working of some modern electronic creation that had temporarily stopped working….I’m sure a familiar story to most…. and turning to me for help when I suggested the reason it had switched off she said “well, what use is THAT!”…
All I could do was shrug, agree and say “what use indeed?” Wot use.
It now features as an everyday phrase for most things. Not because we live in a constant sense of frustration, more perhaps that it is so useful. It can express so many emotions. Those two little words, rolled into one. Try it yourself. Do. Put the emphasis on one or other of the parts and best acting foot forward. You see? Boredom, frustration, incredulity, relief, resignation, excitement, fear. Everything. It’s fab. And that’s why it’s the title of this blog. Endless possibilities cloaked in a humorous little quip.
So thank you for reading this far. It is a beginning of something….but although I’m not sure what it will turn into I expect that ‘wot use’ will cover it.
